STORY
To sift: To make a close examination of all the parts of something to find something or to separate what is useful from what is not.
Sifting the Inner Belt was a year-long experimental research and participatory project that closely examined Boston's South End neighborhood, creating emotional, conceptual, and physical bridges between the Boston Center for the Arts and the Berkeley Street Community Garden.
With the collaboration of artists, activists, and community residents, the project unfolded through dialogue and community engagement, culminating at the BCA with performance events, site-specific installations, research displays, and multifaceted social experiments.

[Background & Neighborhood Context]
Boston's South End is a neighborhood with a rich history of immigration and cultural diversity. In recent years, however, rapid gentrification has transformed the area—driving up housing costs and forcing out long-term residents and immigrant communities, leading to visible social displacement and friction.
[The Berkeley Street Community Garden]
A key focal point of the project was the Berkeley Street Community Garden. In the 1970s, local residents—many of them Asian immigrants—occupied vacant lots left behind by stalled urban renewal projects. They cultivated the land to grow crops from their homelands, such as bitter melon, turning the space into a vital sanctuary of memory, identity, and community resilience.
[Process & Outcomes]
Sifting the Inner Belt engaged residents, activists, and interdisciplinary collaborators through oral history interviews, dialogue-driven workshops, and site-responsive interventions.
The culmination at the Boston Center for the Arts (BCA) bridged the gallery space and the community garden through multi-layered social experiments—including "The Weeding Project," a sound installation that broadcast ambient sounds collected from the garden to observe weed growth, as well as performance pieces rooted in local narratives. The project acted as a conceptual filter, "sifting" through the neighborhood to elevate marginalized stories, emotional truths, and cultural heritage.
