STORY
In the past, a section of Boston's Chinatown was recognized as a bustling red-light district, frequented by numerous clubs and often referred to as a 'playground' for sailors.
Culture Clubbing was an evening of performances organized in the display windows of a Boston Ballet facility in Chinatown—evoking the burlesque style that once defined the neighborhood. Art as intervention; the street as stage.

[Historical Background & Red-Light District]
In the mid-to-late 20th century, a portion of Boston's Chinatown overlapped with the city's notorious "Combat Zone"—a sanctioned red-light district filled with adult entertainment venues, burlesque theaters, and strip clubs frequented by sailors and tourists. This historical layering created complex social dynamics and lingering stigmas for the local Asian American community.
[Artistic Performance & Window Intervention]
Culture Clubbing reactivated this historical memory through a series of live, site-responsive performance interventions staged inside the street-facing display windows of a Boston Ballet facility located in Chinatown. Featuring diverse local performance artists, the event reclaimed the aesthetic language of burlesque, turning private practice spaces into a transparent, public spectacle along the sidewalk.
[Impact & Social Engagement]
By blurring the lines between elite high art (ballet), popular street culture, and marginalized history (burlesque), the project turned the street into an open stage for dialogue. It invited passersby, residents, and visitors to critically re-examine how space, historical memory, and gendered bodies intersect within the evolving urban landscape of Chinatown.
Culture Clubbing

Culture Clubbing
