STORY
“Chinatown Orange”: Commodity: 50YR 18/650, Bright & Lively series by Glidden Paints
Chinatown Orange Project was conceived in conjunction with the exhibition "InFlux: Future of Landscape," featuring a semi-permanent billboard that engaged residents, businesses, and organizations in Philadelphia's Chinatown. Its purpose was twofold: to reclaim space through visible means, and to reclaim the meaning of the color "Chinatown Orange," a paint name by Glidden that uniformly defines an entire community.
To achieve this, we painted the entire surface of a parking lot designated as the future site of the long-promised Philadelphia Chinatown Community Center with Glidden's Chinatown Orange, transforming the site into a color field mural and making visible the community's demand for what had been denied.

[Background & Racial Stereotypes]
Glidden Paints released a paint color named "Chinatown Orange" (Commodity: 50YR 18/650, Bright & Lively series)—a commercial designation that uniformized and exoticized an entire Asian American neighborhood through racial stereotyping. Meanwhile, Philadelphia's Chinatown faced continuous pressure from gentrification, urban development, and a long-promised but continually delayed community center.
[Artistic Action & Public Engagement]
In conjunction with the exhibition "InFlux: Future of Landscape," the project transformed a vacant parking lot—the designated future site of the community center—into a massive color field mural. Utilizing Glidden's actual "Chinatown Orange" paint, artists, youth, and local residents painted the entire ground surface, reclaiming the space through visible public art and turning a commercial label into a medium for community empowerment.
[Impact & Billboard Intervention]
Alongside the painted site, a semi-permanent billboard was installed to amplify the community's voice and demand for self-determination. By physically occupying the site with the very color used to label them, the project confronted institutional neglect, raised awareness around environmental and cultural justice, and asserted the neighborhood's rights to its own land and narrative.
