STORY
Monkey Mt. Island is a site-specific work created for Sense Island—a nocturnal art festival held on Sarushima, an uninhabited island in Yokosuka City. Drawn to the island's circumference of approximately 1,700 meters, I sourced fishing nets and ropes from Yokosuka's fishing port and, guided by the Instruction, performed the act of connecting and tying the materials into a ball-like sphere resembling a clump of wool. Throughout the exhibition period, the sandy beach became a canvas for this process—a large sphere sculpted through the Instruction, with a panoramic view of the sea.

The work draws attention to the often-overlooked boundary between the island and the water, inviting viewers to imagine the natural environment extending beneath the surface of Sarushima's waters. It also offered festival attendees an opportunity to engage with nature—aligned with the overarching theme of rediscovering human senses in darkness.
猿山の島は、横須賀市の無人島・猿島で夜間にのみ開催される「Sense Island ー感覚の島ー 暗闇の美術館」のために制作されたサイト・スペシフィックな作品である。島の円周が約1,700mであることに着目し、横須賀の漁港で使用されている釣り網やロープを素材として用いた。インストラクションに導かれながら素材を結びつなぎ、毛玉のような球体を造作するパフォーマンスを行った。展示期間中は、そのプロセスから生まれた巨大な球体が、海を一望できる砂浜に展示された。

この作品は、見過ごしがちな水辺との境界線に着目し、猿島の海面下に続く自然を想像すること、そして本芸術祭の趣旨である「暗闇の中で人間の感覚を取り戻す」ことや、自然との関係を探る機会を提供することを目指して制作しました。
