STORY
A Thousand Whisker Roots was a participatory, site-specific work created for Mind Trail OKUYAMATO—a walking art festival in Nara Prefecture. One thousand hand-crafted canes made from freshly cut hinoki cypress branches sourced from the local mountain were scattered across the festival's starting points throughout the region. Each cane supported participants' walking while serving as a catalyst for encountering nature.
During the festival, the canes were passed on like batons in a relay—accumulating the experiences and souls of each participant, nurturing an invisible collaborative work. On the final day of each festival, the canes were ceremonially burned with sacred fire at Ryusenji Temple on Mt. Omine, completing the work as an act of gratitude toward nature.

Walking through Okuyamato—where 90% of the land is forest—we found ourselves drawn again to the roots and whiskers of trees, deeply embedded in the earth, drawing energy from the ground. This became the work's guiding image: each cane as a companion, an antenna, a cat's whisker—guiding the participant's sense of touch along the trail.
In 2022, a collaboration with lyricist and poet KAKU Wakako gave birth to A Thousand Whisker Roots and a Thousand Words of Life—her poetry becoming a guide through the Tenkawa Village area.
千本のひげ根は、奈良県を舞台にした歩く芸術祭「Mind Trail奥大和 ー心のなかの美術館ー」のために構想した参加型・サイトスペシフィックな作品である。地元の山から切り出したヒノキの生枝で造作した総数1,000本の杖が、各会場のスタート地点に点在し、参加者の歩みを支えながら、自然と対峙する触媒となった。
芸術祭期間中、杖はリレーのバトンのように引き継がれ、参加した人々の経験と魂が蓄積されることで育まれる、目には見えない共同作品でもあった。毎年芸術祭の最終日には、大峰山龍泉寺で神聖な炎によって焚き上げられ、自然への感謝とともに作品は完成した。

森林率90%を誇る奥大和を歩きながら、私たちはあらためて大地に深く根を張り、地中からのエネルギーを取り込む「根、ひげ根」に着目した。杖は道中の支えであるだけでなく、触角や猫の髭のように、参加者の感覚を司る伴侶として旅路に同行する。
2022年には詩人・覚和歌子とのコラボレーションが実現し、彼女の詩文が道しるべとなる「千本のひげ根と千の寿詞（ことば）」を天川村エリアで制作した。
